Hello
Congratulations, you have reached the website of Mark Alexander Sneddon. While you’re here take a look around. This website shows myself as professional graphic designer and creative tinkerer. A place for me to express my ideas in art, design and anything else - my workshop and studio space if you will.
Graphic Design Philosophy
I believe in content over style and that the world can be improved through smarter design and imagination. Better design can influence change in the minds and attitude of the audience when given the opportunity. I’m not interested in aesthetic trends or pretty for pretty’s sake but a thoroughly researched and relevant design solution for each client. I look to build-in longevity, strength, clarity and purpose in everything I do and by doing so create designs that are made to last and have value.
Design Research
This is where I experiment (and innovate where possible) with ideas and objects. I like mixing disciplines; construction, industrial, textile, graphic design and so on. Can they be done? Do they make sense? I wonder what would happen? More often than not one idea leads to another. It's my design lab; and many ideas are stimulated by objects and situations often very removed from a design studio.
For example; the final design for the Iopio Light typeface concept is directly influenced by a canvas pouch that housed wood chisels on a building site and from my experimental signage work for Noel Robinson Architects. I had designed the typeface itself some time previous but struggled with context. With these influences I was able to manufacture my own context, which in itself is quite a lesson to learn: If something feels right, create the reason why it should exist if it doesn't already.
My work is based on many themes from the serious to the very stupid. I have many influences extending beyond graphics, including architecture, film, comedy and product design. I like to draw, create typefaces and play with conceptual ideas.
